about progressive theology
"Instead of thinking of God
as a noun it is perhaps more useful to think of God as a
verb. For God is known through action. To say we need to be
the place where God speaks means that we need to be the
place where God moves through the world. We have to endeavor
to be that place where we embody the life of God instead of
merely talking about God." -Peter Rollins
Progressive theology strives to
reflect the same kind of compassion seen in the life of
Jesus Christ by maintaining dignity for all
human beings and working toward reconciliation, social
justice and peace among all people. It is not simply
about "getting to heaven," but rather is about making a
vital difference in the here and now. It values
sincere questions and various perspectives, and understands
this kind of diversity to be a strength in which we can
learn from one another. It has been said
that progressive faith is "defined by Jesus, but not
necessarily confined to Jesus."1
Some of its most prominent spokespersons include
Marcus Borg,
Jim Wallis,
Anne Lamott
and
William Sloane
Coffin.
